At least 39 people have died of malaria and diarrhea in Mewun Payam in South Sudan’s Boma State as cases of the two diseases spread since the beginning of March, a local official said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Thursday, John Dunyi, an MP representing Mewun Payam in the state parliament, said local residents, especially children were suffering from diarrhea and vomiting in his constituency.
The lawmaker complained about acute shortages of malaria medicines in his area, saying some people have gone to Pibor to bring malaria drugs.
“MSF has carried out a need- assessment survey and found that people were dying of malaria and water-borne diseases,” said Dunyi.
He called on health organizations to come and rescue the situation in the area, while complaining about absence of humanitarian organizations in his payam. The state MP pointed out that they have only one NGO operating in Mewun area.
Mewun Payam, which is located about 37 kilometers way from Jebel Boma area, has no roads leading to its neighboring areas.
