The police in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have confirmed the killing of 35-year-old Deng Dut Nuoi in Aweil town’s Tiit Agok suburb on Monday night.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the state police commissioner, Major General Philip Madut said no arrests had been made so far.

“The crime happened in the outskirts of Aweil Town and the victim was a farmer known as Deng Dut Nuoi, 35, who stayed in Tiit Agok village. The Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel are currently deployed on the ground to trace the perpetrators and all information on the incident,” said Gen. Madut.

One of the residents who preferred anonymity said the victim was attacked by a group of people and they stab him to death.

“The was chatting with people here in Maper Akot Market. When he was going home, it seems that some people followed and attacked him with knives near his home. They then escaped. When the family came out, they found him lying on the ground and he passed on a few minutes later,” he narrated.

On his part, the rights and civil activist, Samuel Garang Dut tasked the government to protect the lives of the people within towns and villages.

“The lives of the people within and around the town are the responsibility of the government through the security organs. If security and order are in place, such incidences can be controlled, but since the security and state government are reluctant, such incidences may happen,” Garang said.

Dut urged the government to immediately apprehend the culprits so that rule of law and accountability are upheld.
