The authorities in Lake State’s Yirol East County on Wednesday confirmed that they have apprehended 35 suspects linked to last month’s dispute that led to deadly sectional clashes in the Aliet cattle camp for investigation.
The Executive Director of Yirol East County, James Dhuor Apiu, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the conflict between the Pan Awuol and Panthier sections of Yali Payam over the ownership of Aliet cattle camp led to five deaths and six injuries as opposed to the police report that said nine people died and six people were injured.
“After the fighting, we sent forces to arrest the ringleaders and youth who were fighting on both sides. This was a move to stop the escalations and to make sure that the situation improved,” he said. “As we are speaking, there is no more problem at that cattle camp which has now been vacated. I want to tell our communities that the Lakes State government condemns any disputes related to land or cattle camps.”
“Governor Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor said we are not ready to talk about issues of disputed lands and that communities should share the lands and cattle camps amicably,” Dhuor added.
He said the rival groups claiming ownership of the disputed cattle camp have been told to vacate it until the matter is resolved.
