35,000 displaced by attacks on SPLA-IO area

Attacks carried out by forces loyal to Salva Kiir last week have resulted in the displacement of about 35,000 people in northern Jonglei, an area controlled by the SPLA-IO faction.

The displaced have fled from SPLA-IO controlled areas in Canal/Pigi and Fangak counties to other areas controlled by the same opposition faction.

Citing sources in both armed factions, Radio Tamazuj reported on 5 November that SPLA-Juba forces loyal to Salva Kiir attacked Pigi Couty early last week. The attacks came in response to SPLA-IO attacks on SPLA-Juba positions in Doleib area.

In the wake of the clashes, the United Nations reported in a humanitarian bulletin on Saturday, “Heavy fighting in Khorfulus areas of Canal/Pigi and Fangak counties, Jonglei State, resulted in the displacement of about 35,000 people to Ayod County and the New Fangak areas.”

“Humanitarian flights to the area were suspended,” the UN bulletin noted, adding that aid agencies are assessing the impact and required response.
