Only 331 candidates in South Sudan’s Yei River state registered for this year’s secondary school certificate examinations, a senior official from the education ministry said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the state director for education, Felix Amule said 82 of the 331 candidates are females.
“Candidates in Yei are sitting their final examinations amid security challenges in the area. It’s high time the candidates determine their fate as responsible citizens of this country,” he said.
Students from eight secondary schools, he added, have gathered at Yei Day Secondary School for the exams, amid tight security.
According to Amule, the two weeks exercise, which started with English language, ends with additional Mathematics.
At total of 23, 316 candidates started their secondary school certificate exams in the country on Monday.
South Sudan's education indicators are among the worst in the world due to protracted conflicts and under funding by the national government.
