At least three men who are suspected to have been involved in the killing of Nguot Gai Liah, 53, last week in the Bentiu displaced people’s camp were apprehended in the camp’s Sector Three on Monday.
On 3 July, assailants attacked and stabbed Gai to death using a spear at his home in Block One, Sector Three of the camp. At the time, John Malieth, the police spokesperson in Unity State, told Radio Tamazju that the deceased was killed at 3 a.m. when he got out of his shelter to relieve himself.
The vast camp was handed over to the state government in 2020 by the UN.
In a new twist of events, David Matut Both, the police commander of the camp’s Sector One gate, confirmed to this publication on Monday evening that indeed the three suspects had been arrested and sent to Bentiu for processing.
“The joint police have worked very hard to arrest the three criminals who were trying to create insecurity in the IDP camp. Before we arrested them, we collected primary information from the family of the deceased. Before he died, the deceased told his family members that he had fought with the three people who attacked him and injured one of them,” he explained. “The three suspected were arrested today (Monday) after we were informed by the community that the criminals had been seen around. We went and found them, including the injured person, at Block One, Road 8, Shelter 5 in Sector Three.”
Commander Matut added: “Following directives from the police commissioner in Unity State, we sent the suspects to Bentiu.”
He said the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) will now take over, investigate the case, and produce the suspects in court.
