At least three people were killed and 12 others wounded on Sunday when clashes erupted between two communities in Amongpiny County of Western Lakes State, the police said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the state police spokesperson, Captain Elijah Mabor Makuac said violent clashes occurred in Cuei-adukan area when armed youth from the Rup community raided about 200 cows from the Pakam community.
The police officer further said most of those affected were pupils of Cuei-adukan Primary School.
He pointed out that the clashes happened in the presence of the state governor, Mahmoud Solomon who was in Cuei-adukan area to control the security situation.
Mabor said that the state governor’s vehicle was hit by bullets and one of his bodyguards was shot. He added that those injured are receiving treatment at Rumbek State Hospital while the wounded soldier was flown to Juba for treatment.
The police officer pointed out that the state government sent a security team to assess houses burnt to ashes and properties looted during clashes.
According to reports, the routine of inter-communal clashes in many parts of the country prevails due to lack of an efficient justice system.
