At least three people were killed and eight others injured when policemen said to have been deployed to supervise a demolition exercise at Gudele Block 4 in Juba fired shots to disperse protesters on Monday.

Gudele Chief Mading Maker told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that policemen killed three people after the residents had gathered to prevent demolition of their homes.

Maker claimed that that the plots were given to South Sudanese citizens from 32 states, saying the police carried out an unauthorised demolition.

“The government has used live bullets instead of using teargas to disperse the demonstrators, and innocent civilians have been killed,” he said.

Deputy spokesperson of South Sudan police, James Dak, admitted that the police fired shots when one of protesters tried to snatch a gun from a policeman during the demolition exercise at Gudele Block 4. He claimed that the protestors were occupying the area without documents.

However, Dak declined to disclose the number of people killed.
