3 killed, 12 wounded in inter-communal fighting in Unity State

Authorities in Mayom County of SouthSudan’s Unity State have confirmed that at least three people were killed and 12 others wounded in inter-communal clashes on Wednesday.

Authorities in Mayom County of SouthSudan's Unity State have confirmed that at least three people were killed and 12 others wounded in inter-communal clashes on Wednesday.

Mayom County Commissioner Chuol Gatluak Manime told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the clashes occurred amongst members of the Bul community in the Wangbuor area.

Gatluak said security forces deployed there managed to calm the situation.

"There is no further fighting this morning of Thursday. The security situation is normal and is brought under control by the organized security forces sent there to separate the two sides. Everyone who was fighting is now at their home and the situation is calm," he added.

The commissioner said the clashes were triggered by long-standing disagreements over women.

"This community has a long historical conflict among themselves, almost four to five years, even before I was appointed as a commissioner of Mayom County. The issue was about women and not cattle raiding," Gatluak stated.
