At least three South Sudanese refugees were injured in Ponyido refugee camp in Ethiopia’s Gambella region after clashes broke out Saturday between rival groups, a camp leader said.
Ruot Kai Muon, a community leader at Ponyido camp, told Radio Tamazuj that a group of refugees at the camp attacked another group in Block 14 and injured three people, including a child.
He said the injured were receiving treatment at Gambella Hospital.
The camp leader decried the persistent rate of such attacks among South Sudanese refugees, pointing out that the attack was not the first of its kind.
He, however, said the situation was now calm after the Ethiopian government deployed police forces to prevent renewed clashes.
Ethiopia’s Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) could not be reached for comment.
Ponyido refugee camp in Gambella region is home to thousands of South Sudanese refugees.
