Three people were injured when two families exchanged fire over girl elopement in Rumbek East County of Lakes State on Tuesday, officials say.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, the police chief inspector of Rumbek East County Brigadier General Makur Dak said a relative of the boy from the Pakuachiir section helped the boy elope a girl from the Panyaar section.
He added that the girl's relatives then attacked the boy's relatives leading to the fight.
“Two were wounded from the girl's parents, and one was wounded from the boy's parents," said Dak.
He added that the situation is calm and that those wounded were receiving treatment at the Thonaduol hospital in Rumbek East County.
The police spokesperson Major Elijah Mabor Makuac said the couple is in police custody.
The state coordinator for Community Empowerment for Progress CEPO, Daniel Laat Kon confirmed the incident but urged both parties to use legal procedures in resolving the matter.
“It is very common that many girls are being raped, impregnated, and eloped in Lakes State because they have dropped out from the school due to coronavirus. Some of the girls now are in the cattle camp, and others are just at home without attending the school classes,” he said.
