South Sudan Police in Aweil East County over the weekend arrested three people, a woman and two men, one of whom, Kur Mayen Adal, is the local chief for carrying out and concealing an illegal abortion in Baac Payam.

According to the police, the three were arrested on Saturday over an abortion that took place on 29th September in the War-bek village of Baac Payam, Aweil East County in Northern Baher el Ghazal State.

Aweil East County acting police commissioner, Deng Chier, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the trio is in custody. He said the chief is being held for attempting to tamper with the case and concealing the crime.

“But those people, their ages are just approximated and the woman is about 30 years the man is 40 years. The chief who was refusing to refer the case was arrested and after that, he was bailed out and has gone away. The incident occurred on 29 September, this is a problem with chiefs that live in the remote village of War-bek and they took long walking until they arrived here on 24 Oct,’’ Chier said.

The executive director of Aweil East County, Abraham Wiik Awan, confirmed the detention of the three suspects and said the police are doing investigations.

“These are police procedures, it happened and three people are under investigation. I know Chief Kur Mayen Adal was not a suspect, but he was defending the woman,’’ Awan said.
