The police in Rumbek town of Lakes State’s Rumbek Central County have confirmed that they are holding three gang members for allegedly killing a senior four (S.4) student who was set to sit the ongoing South Sudan School Certificate examinations which commenced on Monday.

The Lakes State police spokesperson, Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the deceased, Bush Mathok Matoch, 19, was attacked and killed by the three suspects in the Makuriric suburb of Rumbek town while he was returning from home from evening prep on Saturday at 10 p.m.

“On Saturday at around 10 p.m. in the area that lies between Makuriric and Makoi residential areas, a 19-year-old senior four student was attacked and shaved using machetes by the three gang members who have been identified,” he said. “The victim was taken to Rumbek State Hospital but unfortunately later succumbed to the injuries he sustained on the head and arms. Our security forces managed to apprehend the three suspects and they are currently under arrest and undergoing investigation.”

According to Maj. Mabor, the security forces are cracking down on violent gangs and arresting them but some of them are released from jail due to overcrowding and go back and attack innocent people.

“I would like to give my condolences to the family of the deceased for the loss of their beloved son. I would also like to advise the inhabitants of Rumbek Town to contribute towards security,” he said. “Every parent must talk to their children so that they refrain from involvement in criminal activities that may lead to the loss of their or other lives.”

The police officers urged the family of the deceased not to seek revenge and take the law into their own hands but to leave the case to the police and courts of law.
