Authorities in Gogrial West County of Warrap State on Tuesday said three people including a two-year old baby died in Awan yen Payam from flood-related cases there.
Moses Tong Akeen, Awan-Yen deputy payam administrator told Radio Tamazuj Tuesday that one of the incidents involved a hut that collapsed on a family killing a baby on Monday.
“A baby of Bol Mawien Ateny died as a result of hut collapsing on his (Bol’s) family at night and timber fell and hit the baby’s neck. This happened on Monday at Kol-nyieth village”, Akeen said.
He said the other incidents involve a child drowning and a snake bite.
“Also a child drowned in Nyieth village on 29th of September and a man was bitten by a snake while harvesting his crop over the weekend and he died while being taken to the clinic,” Akeen added.
The payam official stated that people affected by the floods have relocated to schools and health facilities as their areas are submerged in water.
“Most of the houses were affected by flood in these areas and people have already moved from low lands to upper areas and they (people) occupied health facilities, Nyieth Primary School, Mading and Agal primary schools but the schools operate at a daytime”, he added.
Ajang Dut Pakak, one of the chiefs of Awan Chan said many people’s homes have been submerged.
“The whole situation is not good. I can say that Awan is covered by water and many people died like that child drowned when children were crossing the river and a hut falling on people is also another news but I don’t have the detail”, he said. “As am talking to you I am standing in water trying to control water entering our houses but we can’t do anything now we are helpless” chief Ajang Dut lamented
