The commissioner of Duk county in South Sudan’s Jonglei state said three people have been killed in the area over the last week.
Commissioner Michael Malual Wuor told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday one person was killed when attackers opened fire on a motorcylce on 14 July between Ayueldit and Poktap. A police officer was shot in the same place on 19 July, he added.
Malual said a local militia from Duk county, which is a Dinka populated county, attacked a Lou Nuer militia in response, killing one of them. Neighboring county Uror is mostly populated by Lou Nuer.
The commissioner said the Uror commissioner informed him a few weeks prior that 300 armed people had organized to attack Duk. Malual said militia from Ayueldit and Poktap were notified of this allegation.
He said people in Duk are travelling in groups due to the insecurity and that security forces and informal militia from Duk have deployed to do daily patrols.
The commissioner said the conflict is aimed at preventing trade between the Dinka community of Duk and the Nuer of Uror.
