At least three children died and six other people were injured when a swarm of bees attacked them in a canoe last week in Guit County of Unity State.
Kaway Chang, the Guit County Commissioner told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that the tragic incident happened between Maga and Bentiu town.
“The nine people were inside the canoe, and a swarm of bees attacked them inside the canoe. The adults tried to escape the bees by jumping into the river but the children remained inside the canoe with nobody. Within ten minutes the three children were killed by the bees and six others were injured among those who jumped off the canoe,” said Chang.
The commissioner urged the people of Guit not to use the Maga port until the police assess and clear it for use.
Nyachiew Koang, a relative of the victims said the victims were escaping floods on the 29th of October.
“The cause of this entire incident is the issue of floods that submerged all the areas of Unity state, even the bees have been forced to move to high lands,” she said.
“The three children who were killed by bees are brothers; they were three, four, and seven years old. The rest of the people who were injured are still in hospital,” Nyachiew noted.
