About 3000 cows stolen during a raid by a group of armed men in Uror County of Jonglei State were recovered late on Tuesday last week, authorities said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, John Kel Mayul, a lawmaker representing the area in the state legislative assembly, said the recovered animals were stolen by a group of armed criminals from Uror County’s Pajimar village on Tuesday afternoon.
He pointed out that one herdsman was seriously injured during the encounter with the marauders.
“The attack occurred at 1 pm and fighting went on until 4 pm, after which the raiders were repulsed. More than 3000 cows have been recovered,” he said.
John Daniel Bol, the SPLM-IO spokesperson in the area, confirmed the incident pointing out that residents live in fear of an imminent attack.
Armed Murle men attacked the area and raided cattle but local youth followed, engaged them, and rescued the stolen animals. One of the youth was injured and sustained a very big wound.” Bol said.
Cattle raids are commonplace among the communities in Jonglei.
