The Governor of South Sudan’s Lakes State Rin Tueny Mabor has released 29 inmates, mostly members of the organized officers. Governor Rin issued the order after visiting Rumbek Central Prison on Monday.
The press secretary in the office of the state governor, Mabor Deng confirmed that the inmates were freed to decongest the state jail.
“Governor Rin Tueny Mabor came to Lakes State Central Prison to look into the cases of SSPDF, national security service, prison service, civil defense, and other organized forces with minor cases,” Deng stated.
Deng said the governor also directed for the release of elderly people, particularly those above 80 years of age.
“So there are people that are in this prison above and these are elderly and they are not supposed to be in prison,” he added.
For his part, the Director of Lakes State Prison Maj. Gen. Mariech Citak cherished Lakes State high court for speedily screening cases in a short time.
According to Citak, the state prison is currently accommodating about 889 inmates.
Only 64 of them have so far been convicted including 59 men and 5 women, Citak stated.
“The work of the judges in Lakes State is going well .There is a big number of murderers arrested and there is also a big number of people being convicted too,” he said.
