A mother of three committed suicide by hanging herself with a rope in a bush in Mapuordit in Lakes State’s Yirol West County on Sunday, the police said.
The state’s police spokesperson, Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that they are investigating the incident to ascertain why the 28-year-old woman whose name he did not divulge took her life.
“She sneaked into the forest and hanged herself with rope on Sunday and the incident was reported to us today (Monday),” he said.
For his part, Daniel Laat Kon, a civil society activist in Lakes State, said they heard about the suicide but that details were scanty and that it is related to gender-based violence.
“Most cases of suicide here are related to gender-based violence, forced marriages, or violence as a result of economic hardships in our society,” he stated. “Partners need to address the rising cases of suicide in Lakes State by raising awareness. If you look at the category of the people that are committing suicide, including women and even young people, especially girls, these are related to gender-based violence.”
