A top Sudanese official announced that about 260 Sudanese nationals both male and female have left the country and joined the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (also known as IS or ISIS) and other terrorist groups since 2008.
Speaking to Al-Mjjhar newspaper in Khartoum, the deputy chairman of the Sudanese National Authority for Combating Terrorism, Maawia Ahmed Madeni said more than 10 Sudanese linked to terrorist groups have been killed in Libiya, Iraq, Syria, Mali and Somalia where they operate.
Madeni explained that most of the Sudanese youth who joined ISIS said the Sudanese government did not apply the real Islamic Sharia Law and also cited the independence of South Sudan as one of the reasons that forced them to join terrorist groups.
He added that some youth cited the Sudanese government’s decision to allow deployment of foreign troops while others cited personal and family issues.
