Police authorities in Aweil North County of Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal State have confirmed that a young woman identified as Atong Akech Geng hanged herself on Saturday evening in Malual Center Payam.
The deceased is said to have accused her husband of having a sexual relationship with her sister.
Lt. Anei Nyang Akol, the Aweil North inspector of police, said the woman committed suicide after a court session where she accused her husband of having a sexual affair with her sister.
The police officer said the late's husband Majok Wol Wol was declared innocent by a traditional council, a move the deceased described as unfair.
“This woman, according to the available information, was accusing her husband that he has sexual relations with her sister. That was the reason why she committed suicide. She was named Atong Akech Geng, a young woman of 25 years and her husband is now arrested,’’ Lt. Anei said.
“They have attended several court sessions with traditional authorities and there were no more probes and that is why the woman became sad. The husband was saying he can take an oath in case the wife insists on her accusation. The accusation was not probed and if it was probed, the legal orders would have been declared by the chiefs,’’ he added.
Andrew Deng Deng, a government administrator in Malual Center, confirmed the incident and said the problem started in the family while the couple was still living in neighboring Sudan. He said that the deceased insisted that she caught them having sex but her husband denied it.
“Yes, this problem started from Sudan and they came to South Sudan and met their families in the Malual Center here. The two families went to the court and the court condemned the lady and she was taken back to her house, so she decided not to live with the husband who maintains sexual affairs with her small sister,’’ Deng said.
