At least 25 shops in the Amiet Market of Ameth Aguok County in the Abyei Administrative Area were completely gutted on Wednesday night after a fire outbreak, officials said.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
The Abyei Security Adviser, Kelek Kon, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that only one trader was injured in the fire.
“There was firebreak last night in Abyei Market which gutted 25 shops including restaurants, tea cafes, and pharmacies. Just one trader was injured after trying to rescue his good from the blaze. He was taken to hospital. No other human injuries have been recorded,” Kon assured.
Nyok Deng Rou, the Ameth Aguok County commissioner said more details regarding the fire including its cause will be released as soon as investigations are completed.
“The firebreak took place in the Amiet Market when the winds were blowing speedily around 11 pm. The fire consumed the eastern part of the Market up to Bus Park,” he said. “We don’t have concrete information as of now, we will update you later because we are surveying the damage.”
The Amiet common market was established in 2016 to sustain peace between the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya tribes in the area.
