Health officials in Western Equatoria State are on high alert following reports of 24 suspected measles cases in Yambio.
The state health minister, James Abdallah Arona, confirmed the suspected cases in Yambio town and assured the public that health authorities were taking action to prevent the spread of measles.
“We have recorded suspected measles cases, and fortunately, our health team—under the leadership of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) director—recently attended a workshop in Juba. We are now planning a vaccination campaign, not only for Western Equatoria but also as part of a wider national effort across 11 states,” Arona said.
He added: “We are expecting a busy period between now and April 27 as we roll out the campaign. Our teams are working tirelessly to enhance public health and sanitation.”
The minister also confirmed that there had been no confirmed cases or official declaration of a cholera outbreak from the national Ministry of Health.
Yambio State Hospital’s medical director, Dr. Samuel Konjo, provided further updates.
“Since the beginning of March, we have received 24 suspected measles cases. The good news is that all the admitted cases were treated successfully. Currently, we have only one case still under observation, and the patient’s condition is stable,” Konjo said.
