About 200 shops at various markets in Wau town in South Sudan’s Western Bahr al Ghazal have been closed due to declining purchase power of the population, a local official said.
Wol Charles, the Head of the Chamber of Commerce, said in a press statement that most of the shoppers including foreigners selling clothes and food items stopped working because of the current economic crisis.
Wol predicted closure of more shops in the coming days if prices continue to rise and consumers stop from buying non-essential commodities at the market.
He pointed out that some retailers incurred losses as a result of the rising prices of consumer goods in South Sudan.
