Local authorities in Pariang County in South Sudan’s Unity State announced a sharp rise in new refugee arrivals from Nuba Mountains to the county.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, County Commissioner Monylang Manyiel said 200 to 300 Nuba refugees arrive in Yida camp every day. He said the new arrivals are being taken to Adjuong Thok camp in Pariang County.
Yida camp accommodates approximately 70,000 people. UNHCR has designated the smaller Adjoung Thok camp, about 25 kilometres from Yida, as the settlement site for new arrivals from the Nuba Mountains, and permits new arrivals to stay in Yida only while in transit.
The county official pointed out that the Nuba refugees at Adjuong Thok are reporting deteriorating humanitarian conditions due to shortages of food being given to them by humanitarian organizations.
Monylang added that the refugees who have been living in Yida camp for a long period of time have embarked on farming like local residents.
However, the commissioner revealed that this year’s farming season has failed to flooding, which worsened the humanities conditions of the refugees and the local citizens.
He called on the international NGOs and Unity state authorities to help the conflict-affected people in the county.
