20 South Sudanese police officers trained on community relations in Wau

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has concluded a three-day training workshop for 20 South Sudanese police officers in Wau town in Western Bahr el Ghazal state.

The program taught police on international conventions regarding creation of good relationships with communities.

Michael Danti, Regional Police Commissioner at the ICRC, said the training workshop focused on how police can carry out their daily duties and deal with events such as detention and prevention of the use of live ammunition near civilians.

The regional police commissioner further said the 20 police officers were trained on how to deal with traffic accidents and the other emergency cases based on international standards.

He added that the training is part of the organization’s mandate to educate the police on international humanitarian law and is the third of its kind in South Sudan.

Michael confirmed that ICRC will continue holding regular meetings with the police in Western Bahr el Ghazal.

Police official Col. Andrew Chiei Bak said the training provided the information needed to create good friendships with the communities.

He said the police still need more training in order to reach international and regional standards.
