At least 20 footballers from Maridi County of South Sudan’s Western Equatoria State are admitted to the Lui and Mundri West hospitals after their truck overturned in Katobi Payam last evening.

Mundri West County Commissioner Zelipha Dawa said the team was traveling back following a successful peace sports competition over the weekend in Mundri West County.

She said one of the players is in critical condition while the truck driver broke his arm.

“Just between Mundri and Katobi, they got an accident and I did not check the number of all those who were injured yesterday because I panicked,” Dawa said. “According to the medical report from our doctor, only one person is unconscious but this morning, I heard his now talking and the driver’s hand broke into two. This is a serious concern.”

Commissioner Dawa said that the traffic police told her that initial investigations indicate that the truck driver was overspeeding yet his truck had a faulty brake.

Maridi County Commissioner Bodi Michael confirmed the accident but said he did not have many details about the accident at the time.
