20 vaccinators have been trained to carry out a vaccination campaign against animal diseases in South Sudan’s Aweil State.
The training was supported by the state ministry of agriculture in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the director general in the ministry’s animal resources department, Peter Jok Dut said the unit is determined to ensure that all the animals are healthy.
He said training is important because the ministry needs well-trained staff to assist in reducing animal health problems in the state.
Dut further said the exercise seeks to build capacities of local animal vaccinators, adding that more ministry staff would benefit from it.
Livestock resources contribute only 3% to the gross domestic product in South Sudan.
Over 65 percent of the population relies on livestock for their survival. Cattle are used not only for milk and meat, but to pay dowry to the bride’s family before a marriage in many parts of the country.
