Local authorities in Lafon County in Eastern Equatoria State have arrested two suspects for involvement in ambushing and robbing travelers along the Imehejek- Ibahure road.
On 17 October, criminals ambushed and robbed SSP 100,000 and property from the occupants of a vehicle that was transporting a dead body to Ibahure for burial.
Mengistu Ukach, the Lafon County commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that two suspects were arrested following the highway robbery and that they were on Monday handed over to the Eastern Equatoria State police.
“There was an incident that happened on the 17 October when a vehicle coming from Torit was ambushed by some criminals after reaching Ibahure and all their belongings were taken away from them including money amounting to 100,000 SSP plus,” he said. “Two people have been arrested and they were taken to Torit under the government security apparatus.”
“The community was not happy so they took action under the command of the chiefs and traced these criminals and handed them over two of six suspects,” Commissioner Ukach added.
Meanwhile, the commissioner of police in Eastern Equatoria State, Major General James Enoka Monday, confirmed that the two suspects had been transported to and are now being held at the Torit Central Police Station.
“We sent a force from here (Torit) on Monday to bring the two suspects and they are now here in custody,” he said. “They will be brought before the court of law. The complaint is here so the investigation is going on. More suspects might be arrested because people commit crimes in groups and those who assisted must be arrested to face the full force of the law.”
