2 refugees dead after rabid dog bites in Maban County

A rabid dog attacked and killed two refugees at Kaya camp for Blue Nile refugees in Maban County in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state, a health official said.

Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, several refugees complained about rabid dogs prowling the area, amid a lack of anti-rabies vaccine at healthcare centres in Maban.

Juma Aurta, who is in charge of the Kaya Healthcare Centre, told Radio Tamazuj that two people who sustained dog bites have recently died in the area.

Separately, Aurta said several others were also bitten by snakes. He pointed out the healthcare centre lacks anti-rabies vaccines and anti-snake venom.
