2 policemen killed in cattle raid in East Darfur

Two policemen from the Central Auxiliary Unit were killed and eight civilians wounded in an ambush by unknown assailants in Sudan’s East Darfur State on Wednesday.

Two policemen from the Central Auxiliary Unit were killed and eight civilians wounded in an ambush by unknown assailants in Sudan’s East Darfur State on Wednesday.

An official source told Radio Tamazuj that the incident took place when they were pursuing a group of cattle raiders in Al Fado area, about 35 kilometres north of Ad Daein town.

The attackers who were on camels and horses came and raided cattle from the Rizeigat Arab tribe in the area, according to the same source. The police reportedly intervened by pursuing the attackers in order to prevent further tribal conflict in the area.

Two policemen including a first lieutenant were killed and eight civilians were wounded during clashes with the criminals. The wounded were taken to Ad Daein Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Rizeigat tribal leader Al Shartai Bashir Hamdi accused members of Ma’alia of assaulting them at Al Fado area on Wednesday afternoon.

Hamdi told Radio Tamazuj the attack resulted in the killing of one person from their side and that about 650 heads of cattle were taken. He added many policemen were killed and others wounded. However, he did not give further details about the wounded people from their side.

Radio Tamazuj could not reach Ma’alia tribal leaders to comment on the claims.
