The police in the Lakes State capital Rumbek confirmed that they have arrested the driver of a Toyota Hilux vehicle who was speeding and knocked and killed two motorcycle passengers and injured three other pedestrians on Monday.
The speeding vehicle was destined for Juba from Wau before getting involved in a grisly and tragic accident in Matangai Payam in Rumbek Central County.
Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, the police spokesperson in Lakes State, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the injured were taken to Rumbek State Hospital where they remain in critical condition, and that the errant driver was apprehended 50 kilometers away after attempting to flee the scene of the accident.
“Today (Monday), we received information of a very tragic incident that occurred early this morning in Rumbek Town near Matangai Primary School in which a Hilux vehicle traveling from Wau to Juba knocked and killed two people on a motorcycle and wounded three other people and the driver attempted to flee to Juba.” He explained. “Upon receiving this information, we immediately alerted all the police along the Juba road to apprehend the perpetrator but he managed to bypass so many police stations while speeding until later he was apprehended in the Naam-thok area of Rumbek East County after the police set up a very huge barrier and obstacles on the road which he could not bypass.”
“He (driver) has been arrested and will be escorted to Rumbek Town where the incident occurred, investigated and arraigned in court,” Maj. Mabor added.
The police mouthpiece said that the three severely injured victims were immediately evacuated to Rumbek State Hospital for treatment.
“The driver was flying and not driving when he passed through Rumbek Town and we thank God that there was no other accident,” Mabor stated. “A lot of people said he was about to knock them and he even wanted to crush the police officers who attempted to stop at different roadblocks after he fled the accident scene.”
