Lakes State authorities say that a policeman and a civilian were killed during a cattle raid in Cueibet County.

The two are said to have lost their lives while trying to recover stolen cattle last Friday in Abiriu Payam.

Lahat Marial Wol, the payam administrator identified the policeman as Matur Majak Ayiei.

“When the cattle were raided from Abiriu Payam, the police officer went after the raiders. He shot one of the raiders in an attempt to rescue the raided cattle but he was also shot dead by the raiders. This is what happened on Friday,” he added.

According to Marial, the raiders are alleged to be from Mayom Payam of Rumbek Central county.

Rumbek North county commissioner Isaac Mayiek Noi speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Saturday confirmed the incident, citing that the security situation had been contained.

“Now, the total of those are two people, one is a CID police officer, and the other is a civilian from Rumbek Central county,” he said. “The cattle camps which were around there have been moved to Wulu territories because of flooding in most of the areas. There are no cattle grazing spaces left, everywhere is occupied by floods and animals were dying.”

Cattle raids are commonplace among communities in Lakes state,
