At least two fishermen were killed and two others injured while five of their children were abducted in an attack by armed assailants on a fishing village between Jonglei State’s Nyirol and Pigi counties on Sunday evening.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, James Bol Makuey, the Nyirol County commissioner, said the assailants took their victims by surprise by attacking them while in their huts sheltering from the rain.
“On Sunday at 5 p.m., armed assailants attacked Ninamajak, a riverine village between Pigi and Nyirol,” he said. “This attack resulted in the killing of 2 fishermen and 2 others wounded while five children were abducted. One of our executive chiefs was among those injured.”
The county official condemned the attack as provocative and said that it disrupted the economic activities of the locals there. He accused armed youth suspected to have come from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) of involvement in the attack.
“In this village, the people from Pigi and Nyirol are involved in agriculture and fishing and no one expected Murle youth to attack while we are for peace so we want an intervention from the GPAA government,” he said.
However, Oleyo Akwer Nyalus, the GPAA Information Minister, said they are not aware of any involvement of their youth in attacks in Jonglei State.
