Two people were killed and 14 wounded by a landmine explosion on a Land Cruiser traveling between Kuek and Wadakona in Manyo County of Upper Nile State, which has seen recent conflict between government loyalists and opposition forces.
Commissioner of Manyo Altaib Aljack told Radio Tamazuj that the Land Cruiser was serving people who were displaced to different areas of the county by insecurity when it was hit by the land mine.
The wounded have been transferred to the hospital in Renk for treatment. Aljack said he believes the landmine was laid there a long time ago.
At least 10,000 people were displaced by conflict in the county in the last weeks, according to the commissioner. Others have gone across the Sudanese border into White Nile or South Kordofan states.
Many of the displaced are sleeping in the open without shelter, as authorities try to encourage them to return to their homes. He acknowledged also that the situation is still tense in Kaka Tijariya because forces loyal to Machar have control in the area for nearly two weeks.
