Two people were killed and another one injured when they were waylaid by suspected criminals on Saturday in Rumamer County of Abyei Administrative Area, officials said.
Abyei’s information minister Ajang Deng Miyen told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that it is not clear who the culprits are or where they came from.
“There were criminals who came and attacked people along the road in Rumamer County and killed two people and one was injured on Saturday last week. People followed them but they disappeared into the bushes,” Deng said. “The person who was injured was brought to Abyei health center.”
Minister Deng added that the criminals, whom he says remain unknown, did not raid any cattle nor cause any displacement.
“Nobody knows where they belong because there is confusion nowadays. Sometimes attackers come from Twic, Nuer, and Misseriya. No cows were raided and no displacement took place because they just shot and ran away,” he pointed out.
Meanwhile, Abyei’s security advisor Kelek Kon confirmed the incident and said the criminals are suspected to have come from neighboring Unity State.
“The attackers were identified as youth from Nuer. They attacked people who were moving from Mabok village to Rumamer. They killed two people, injured one person, and they were about 10 armed men,” he said.
Unity State officials were not immediately available for comment.
