At least two people, a teacher and a pupil sustained injuries after a classroom at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Primary School partially collapsed on Tuesday morning in Aweil town.
The school director Ajuong Ajiing Dut told Radio Tamazzuj that a part of one classroom collapsed when the pupils were in class, and the teacher Lino Garang Wany and student Awut Gop Agoth were injured.
Ajiing said the accident was caused by the effect of torrential rains and was grateful that no fatalities were reported.
“It was a wall that was used as a blackboard in one class that fell because there were heavy rains that is why it fell down and injured one teacher and broke one girl’s leg,’’ he added.
The injured teacher, Garang, said he was teaching when the blackboard suddenly collapsed on him.
“The wall collapsed on me except my head, the students are the ones who rescued me under the bricks. My body is still in pain and there are no external injuries but there is an effect internally, I tried to stand up but I could not," he explained.
Northern Bahr el Ghazal’s State secretary-general, Mr. Albino Akol Akol said the state authorities have pledged to reconstruct the classroom.
“The deputy governor (Dr. Tong Lual Ayat) has just mentioned was that he will try to talk with partners and the state government to join their hands to construct that school,” he said.
