The governors of Central Equatoria and Jonglei states and the national ministers of defense and interior are expected to appear before the parliament early next year to present their findings on the killings in Lokiliri.
Last month, five civilians were allegedly shot dead in Nyerjebe village of Lokiliri Payam in Central Equatoria State by suspected armed cattle keepers from Jonglei State.
Interior Minister Mahmoud Solomon Agook, Defense Minister Angelina Teny, Central Equatoria State governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony, and the governor of Jonglei Denay Chagor were charged to investigate the incident.
John Agany, the Chairperson of the Information Committee and Assembly spokesperson told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the leadership of the National Security Services (NSS) will also appear before the August House.
“Yes, it was a piece of information given last week about the incident which took place in Lokiliri. So, the people concerned with the national security, the ministry of interior and the ministry of defense together with the governor of Jonglei and Central Equatoria, These are the ones, and any other person concerned with that incident, they’re all called to come,” Agany said.
The incident involving herders is not the first of its kind in the area. In June 2022, a similar incident occurred in which nine people were killed by suspected herders.
Armed cattle keepers stationed at Mogiri – allegedly moved out of their camps and attacked villagers. The government responded by deploying security forces to calm the situation.
Agany said the Revitalized Transitional National Assembly (RTNLA) took a break from yesterday (Monday) for the festive season until the 15th of January.
