At least two people including a driver identified as Pasquale Madut Ukell lost their lives in a fatal accident along the Aweil-Wau road on Thursday evening.
Col. Deng John Akot, Western Bahr el Ghazal State deputy director for traffic police said two members of the state assembly and other people survived the accident and are admitted to the Wau Teaching Hospital.
He said the MPs were coming from a funeral when the accident occurred.
“Around 7 PM, I received an information from our people in Kangi that there was a car belonging to honorable Andrea Mayar Acho which was coming from Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal state for a funeral, the car started moving from there but when reaching between Kangi and Dhi-Kou, the car overturned after losing control according to eyewitnesses there,” said Akot.
Col. John said the driver was trying to overtake another car when he lost control. He said those injured without specifying are being treated at the Wau Teaching Hospital.
Meanwhile, Andrea Nyibang, an MP at the legislative assembly confirmed the accident.
“There were people who went to Aweil for a funeral. They are two appointed members; Ernesto Paulino Apinyi, the son of the late former MP who replaced his father Paulino Apinyi and Yasir Buolla. They are in critical condition in Wau Teaching Hospital,” he said.
According to the police, about 10 people have lost their lives to road accidents since the beginning of the year.
