2 dead in Duk cattle raid

At least two people were killed during a cattle raid in Duk County of Jonglei State on Sunday, authorities said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Duk County Commissioner John Chatim Ruei, said a local youth was among the dead and that he met his fate while fighting off the assailants who had raided 4,000 head of cattle.

The incident occurred in the Anyiel Village on Sunday at 5 p.m. while our youth were returning home from the grazing site. They were ambushed and 4,000 cattle taken from them,” he stated. “However, they pursued the assailants recovering all the cattle. A youth was lost in the process while on the attackers’ side, a dead body was found.”

The commissioner accused armed youth suspected to have come from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) of involvement in the attack.

However, Jacob Werchum Jouk, the GPAA Information moister, said they were unaware of the attack and that none of their youth had left to attack elsewhere.

Cattle raids have been commonplace among the communities of Jonglei State and their neighbors in GPAA. Last month, armed youth from Jonglei State attacked GPAA’s Gumuruk county and raided 15,000 head of cattle.
