Two men were arrested for selling counterfeit dollars in Magwi County in Eastern Equatoria State last Wednesday and transferred to Torit main prison pending trial.
The duo, Korgan Mayol and Albino Nak, were found in possession of fake USD 3400 in the Magwi main market.
The county police Inspector, Lieutenant Bongomin Godfrey Dorteo, said the suspects claim they sold cattle and were paid in local currency which they exchanged for US dollars to reduce the bulk of the money.
“We arrested these two people. They wanted to sell the fake dollars in the town that is why they were arrested,” Lt. Bongomin said. “They had 34 notes of 100 dollar bills. We do not know how they got this fake money but according to the investigations, one person claims he sold a cow and was given a lot of pounds that is why he bought dollars for easy portability and that is where he got the fake dollar.”
He added: “After he realized he had fake dollars, he also wanted to sell them.”
Lt. Bongomin urged the public to be careful of counterfeit currency.
The Eastern Equatoria State police spokespersons, Colonel Mathew Ochan Jacob, confirmed that the suspects arrived in Torit and are currently on remand at Torit main prison awaiting trial.
“The two suspects arrived and now they are remanded in the prison as they wait for their trial,” Col. Ochan said. “We do not know where they got this money but our investigation will find out. Our constitution is very good and all the sections are clear.”
