A 19-year-old woman’s body was found hanging from a tree, shortly after a quarrel with her husband on Wednesday night, police in Lakes State’s Yirol West County said.

Jok Anyuat, the police investigator in the county told Radio Tamazuj that the deceased, identified as Ayen Telar Nhial, is also said to have been forced to marry Balang Nhial in December 2021 by her family.

He said the lady is suspected to have committed suicide at the Thor-nuar cattle camp on Wednesday at 9:00 PM and said the reasons behind her death remain unclear until investigations are concluded.

“When we conducted primary investigations, a small girl at home told us that she (the deceased) fought with her husband in the evening and after that, she took a chair and went outside. The small girl followed her and she sent that girl to bring her drinking water,” he explained. “When the girl returned she did not find her. The people looked for her and found her hanging on a tree.”

As to what drove the young woman to her death, Anyuat said, “The second information we got is that she was forced to marry a husband because she didn’t agree to be married off at early age by her relatives. I see the cause of committing this suicide should be a forced marriage.”

Anyuat added that the police took the body for postmortem and returned it to the family for burial. He said the family did not report the matter to the police for investigation.

The county medical officer Riak Amuor also confirmed that the woman took her life.
