The police in Lakes State have said that a 19-year-old woman identified as Ajier Mayom on Sunday committed suicide in Bunagok Payam, Awerial County.
The state’s police spokesperson, Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, said the woman hanged herself in a garden at night.
“It is true that a 19-year-old girl escaped at night and committed suicide in the garden and the investigation into the cause of her suicide is ongoing,” he said. “I also heard that she was newly married. Our role as police is to go to the crime scene and take the body to the hospital and this is what happened.
Maj. Mabor appealed to international and national nongovernmental organizations to conduct awareness and sensitization campaigns against suicide.
Joseph Nyuon, a family member of the deceased, said the woman committed suicide over a trivial issue.
“This girl committed suicide over a small issue between her and her mother because the mother told her to do chores at home and she got angry and hanged herself to death in the village,” he explained.
Nyuon said the mother of the deceased was arrested and is being detained at the Bunagok Payam police station.
“This girl got married to someone recently but her marriage ended in court and she was divorced after she had a miscarriage during her first pregnancy,” he added.
