Some 19 soldiers have been injured in a fatal accident on the Torit-Kapoeta Road.
The lorry carrying the soldiers allied to the unified forces, overturned near Idolu Bridge, on Wednesday.
Among those injured was the driver of the lorry, which was ferrying the unified forces for deployment at the Kapoeta borders.
The deployment of a number of SSPDF unified forces at the borders between South Sudan, Uganda and Kenya begun before Christmas.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Thursday, Torit County Commissioner Jacob Attari Albano said the accident occurred in Hiyalla Payam.
“Yes, am aware of that information, the lorry that was supposed to take those combined forces to that side of Kapoeta overturned and even most of those soldiers are now in the barracks of Hiyalla. Those who sustained injuries have been taken to the hospital for treatment,” Attari said.
Meanwhile, Brigadier General Louis Idenge Onorio, the Director of Traffic in Eastern Equatoria State, said: “The vehicle was ferrying 75 soldiers, it was raining at that time and the road was slippery. The vehicle overturned, 19 soldiers including the driver were admitted at the hospital. There were no deaths, even their commander is currently in Hiyalla, the vehicle was pulled out yesterday [Wednesday].”
The traffic chief added, “The New Year’s celebrations went on well in the whole state even during Christmas, there were no accidents.”
