At least 19 underage girls including South Sudanese and some foreigners allegedly involved in prostitution were arrested in Yei town of Central Equatoria State, a municipal official said.
Salvano Ali, Deputy Mayor of Yei town, told Radio Tamazuj the mass arrests of sex workers came after an inspection campaign in hotels and nightclubs by municipal authorities.
Some of the arrested girls blamed lack of shelter for their involvement in the prostitution. During the investigations some of them said they came from villages, according to Ali
He further disclosed that medical examinations confirmed that four girls among them are HIV/AIDS positive. He said that the arrested girls have been released on bail, but a local court fined the hotel and nightclub owners 3,000 SSP.
