At least 19 inmates charged with minor crimes were released from Wau Central Prison in South Sudan’s Wau State on Thursday.
The decision was taken by the state chamber of commerce in Wau town and a South Sudanese businessman who sponsored the payment of inmates’ fines. The initiative included men and women who spent more than six months in the prison.
For their part, several released inmates expressed happiness to reunite with their families. They thanked the chamber of commerce and the businessman for releasing them.
