18 people killed in attack in Maban: official

At least 18 civilians were killed and 24 others wounded in an attack on Banketa area in greater Maban County, a local official said.

The incident happened on Saturday morning.

Southwest Maban County Commissioner John Jerewa Jaafar told Radio Tamazuj on Sunday that gunmen attacked Baketa and killed 18 people including women.

He further said 24 people sustained injuries after the attack. The local official said the wounded people are receiving treatment, pointing out that the government condemned the attack on innocent civilians.

 “Two Sudanese traders and three Eritreans were also among the people killed,” he said.

Jerewa revealed that three girls and five women went missing after the incident.

The commissioner accused members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In-Opposition of involvement in the incident.

The minister of Northern Upper Nile information Albino Wunthou Padiet also confirmed the incident.

Opposition officials in the area could not immediately be reached for comment.
