17 new cases of cholera were recorded in Kapoeta Civil Hospital in South Sudan’s Kapoeta State since Sunday, a senior health official said.

17 new cases of cholera were recorded in Kapoeta Civil Hospital in South Sudan’s Kapoeta State since Sunday, a senior health official said.

The hospital’s medical director Mustapha Lokuru told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that they received 17 new cases of cholera in the area, five of which have already been discharged.

He pointed out that a campaign to create awareness among citizens on cholera is still ongoing in the state.

Cholera is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhoea, which can lead to dehydration and even death if untreated. It is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a bacterium called Vibrio cholerae.
