At least 15 armed youth suspected to have been involved in intercommunal clashes in Tonj East County of Warrap State have been arrested, a local official said.

Gabriel Awan Makuoch, the Secretary General of the defunct Tonj State, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the suspects were arrested by security forces deployed to the area.

He pointed out that the suspects are being held in Tonj prison and would appear before a competent court to answer the charges.

“Our mission to Tonj East was to install law, order and save lives and properties of the people. We went to Tonj East on April 12, 2020 and unfortunately found fighting between Jalwau and Thiik communities. Our forces managed to stop the fighting and in the process arrested some armed youth who were brought to Tonj prison,” said Makuoch.

He added, “This could be a message to any of the youth or armed youth who may have intentions of attacking and killing anybody”.

The official said the situation is calm after security forces intervened.

At least eight people were killed and 11 wounded in the incident.
