About 15 people were killed, and 17 others sustained serious injuries after an attack on the Mangol Apuk village in Warrrap State last Friday.

Warrap State government spokesperson Riing Deng told Radio Tamazuj that attackers believed to be from neighboring Unity state attacked the village at 4 am.

“On date 28 they attacked the village at the usual time they always attack people and killed 15 people including women and children and they run away. These people are suspected to belong to Unity state,” he said.

Deng said the government has sent a police force to the area to protect the civilians from further attacks despite the lack of communication network in the area.

He urged the community in the affected area to remain calm as the government investigates the matter.

“The government is urging the civilians to remain calm as state government is ensuring their protection. The police force is now in the town for the first time because there were no police in the village and lack of communication network is also a challenge,” Deng said.

For his part, Unity State information minister Gabriel Hon Makuei confirmed that armed youth from Mayom county of his state were responsible for the attack.

“Some criminals from Mayom crossed to Warrap at the area of Mangol and killed people and disappeared into the bushes according to Mayom Commissioner,” Hon said.

The minister noted that the criminals have not been apprehended but Mayom County authorities are pursuing them.
